I have a new obsession. The obsession is called "Efterklang" and it is a Danish band I am absolutely crazy about.
Do you know this band? Efterklang is one of those bands that thrives on live interaction and performance. The band playing together in a room is a much different animal than the band recording in a studio. A collaboration between the band and filmmaker Vincent Moon, An Island is a most unusual performance film. Conceived and created from the ground up as something that would play with the medium the picture was shot on an island off the coast of Denmark with the band pulling in as many musical collaborators as possible to generate a feature length performance with the music informing the film and vice versa rather than the film simply capturing a performance. Over an intense period of 4 days Efterklang collaborated with more than 200 local musicians, kids and parents, creating new performances and interpretations of songs from their Magic Chairs album. It was all filmed by Vincent Moon who same time conducted several filmic and musical experiments with Efterklang as his dedicated play mates. And making it even more exciting is the band's unusual distribution and screening strategy. They're calling on fans to host screenings in their homes, schools, or other venues, the only restrictions being that they must be free and the venue in question must hold at least five people. If you can meet those terms you're good to go, at no charge. Call it a thank you from the band to the fans who have supported them over the years. The movie will be out in February 2011.
See the 3rd trailer here, which is just wonderful on vimeo: http://vimeo.com/18622678
